News: Authors and the World in London

On Friday 5 December, Authors & the World is having its first event outside Lancaster. Rebecca Braun, Emily Spiers and guest-member Sally-Ann Spencer will be working with a mixed cohort of undergraduate students from Notre Dame’s London campus and King’s College London in a workshop that encourages reflection on how authors give literature a ‘face’. After an introductory lecture that sets out some ideas about literary value and how authors are made to embody it through the award of literary prizes, the students will work in groups to choose which German authors they would like to pitch to a panel of (role-played) industry insiders for translation and marketing in the English-speaking world. As well as learning new ways of thinking about the author as a brand and literature as a commodity, the students will also gain valuable insight into the world of publishing, translation, and cultural ambassadorship.

The lecture will be live-tweeted under #litceleb, and some of the materials we generate will be made available on our site in due course.
